The Christian Family
Published in Paperback by Faith One Publishing (December, 1996)
Author: Frederick K. C. Price
Average review score:

A must read for today's Christian Couples
Dr. Price does an excellent job in his famous no-nonsense, plain English style of getting to the heart of the matter involving God's purpose for marriage and the duties of the husband and wife. I found the book very easy to read and he gives many scriptural examples throughout to show where God's plan is clear.

I recommend it highly to those couples considering marriage or newly married.

Chroma: Stories
Published in Paperback by Grove Press (July, 1996)
Author: Frederick Barthelme
Average review score:

Tonight's special: blackened chicken and failed marriage
"Moon Deluxe" has the sexier title, but Frederick Barthelme's second collection cuts just as deeply and then some. The characters are people who are trying their best to do the decent thing, but can't quite shake the urge to do the wild and crazy thing. Romance collides with love, safety breeds ennui, material comforts and cultivated irony fend off, but can't cure, yearning and restlessness. Heartbreak is the frequent result. Tight and subtle as the stories are, Barthelme's prose style is often dazzling and virtuosic in a way which should make any reader think twice about calling them "minimalist." Some of the shorter numbers ("Trick Scenery," "Cut Glass") have the lyricism and condensed energy of poetry. But don't let me spoil it for you. Go out and read it yourself.

Churchill on Courage: Timeless Wisdom for Preserving
Published in Hardcover by Thomas Nelson (October, 1996)
Author: Frederick Talbott
Average review score:

Inspiration for today's battles
With so many self-help books on the market today, it's easy to forget that perhaps the greatest lessons come not from today's hottest new talkshow guest, but from those who have weathered history's darkest times. Frederick Talbott has captured the essence of one of history's greatest speakers simply by letting him speak for himself. Winston Churchill's words, spoken in the most trying of times, can give a person a great deal of courage and motivation to cope with today's daily battles.

Talbott gives a brief background with each quotation to put the words into context. And that is enough. The beauty and power of Churchill's words and character come through without any additional analysis or insight. And that is the beauty of this book.

A must for any Churchill fan or anyone whose daily battles sometimes seem too harsh to bear.

Claudius the God
Published in Audio Cassette by Blackstone Audiobooks (January, 1995)
Authors: Robert Graves and Frederick Davidson
Average review score:

A cynical and sad tale, beautifully written
This novel, like its antecedent I, Claudius, will mesmerize those who love classical history, although casual readers may find it tedious. The two works together form a fictional autobiography of the Roman emperor Claudius, who - at least in this literary incarnation - is both an astute observer of first century Roman political society and an extraordinary character in his own right. Born into the Roman imperial family but repelled by the violence and treachery surrounding it, Claudius retreats from power for much of his adult life. He buries himself in obscure academic pursuits and hides, for what he believes to be his own safety, behind array of weird physical disabilities. When his nephew, the mad emperor Caligula, meets his just reward, the middle-aged Claudius is literally dragged against his will onto the Imperial throne. I, Claudius ends with this bizarre scene and Claudius the God takes up from there with the improbable emperor's own account of his reign up to point of his death. Much to everyone's surprise, Claudius emerges into the public eye as an energetic, able and just ruler. And while the great pride he takes in his enterprise is evident, both the style of his rule and the tone of his narrative is characterized by a wry and self-deprecating humor. Much of the book consists of a detailed recounting of the administrative, judicial and military minutia in which Claudius immersed himself. However, there is a deeper theme at work too, which is the inevitability that innocence in a corrupt world will be betrayed. Claudius's closest friend for much of his life is Herod Agrippa, the grandson of the biblical Herod the Great. Herod Agrippa is a charming rogue and schemer who, while genuinely fond of Claudius, teases him mercilessly for being a fool and warns him, as it turns out in all seriousness, to "trust no one". The irony in the admonition is apparent when Herod himself betrays Claudius, plotting militarily against him and almost succeeding. This is only a side story, however. The thematic climax of the book occurs when it comes to light that Claudius's beautiful wife Messalina, whom he adores with the intense innocence of a teenager in love, has been using him all along for the fool, taking lovers and mocking Claudius behind his back. He finally discovers the truth when she is found to be conspiring with one of these paramours to seize the throne. She is executed for her treachery, but Claudius's spirit dies with her. He re-marries, but to a woman he cares nothing about and who, with his knowledge and acquiescence - for his death has been foretold by augury - begins amassing power on her own and conspiring to make way for her own son by a previous marriage. This son is later to enter history as the decadent fiddler Nero. The book closes with actual historical accounts by Tacitus and Dio Cassius of the real-life emperor's death at the hands of his ambitious wife, who poisons him. The last pages give us the final degradation, a bitterly satirical account Seneca, depicting Claudius - in death, once again the fool - trying to enter Olympus as the deified emperor but being banished mockingly to Hades by the other gods. The book is cynical and deeply sad. It's beautifully written and I recommend it, although it won't be to everyone's taste.

Cleaning Headstones, Memorials and Mausoleums
Published in Paperback by National Training Company Publications (01 September, 2000)
Author: Frederick M. Hueston
Average review score:

Must have book for genealogists and historians!
"Historic Cemetery Preservation" is a hot topic for genealogists and historians. Frederick M. Hueston had written a 41-page booklet that provides detail instructions and numerous color photographs related to the cleaning of stone gravemarkers and mausoleums. He relates how many of the common household cleaners and wire brushes will damage the surface of the stone. This booklet will provide you with step-by-step safe cleaning procedures. He has also included information on cleaning mistakes, stain removal, protection and frequently asked questions.

Hueston's booklet will help you to safely clean stone gravemarkers and, in my opinion, is a KEEPER and MUST HAVE for your home or local library. I highly recommend this booklet to anyone who is interested in cleaning stone gravemarkers or cemeteries who need to train their personnel in the proper and safe cleaning procedures.

Collecting the Edged Weapons of the Third Reich, Volume VI
Published in Hardcover by Johnson Reference Books (June, 1992)
Authors: Thomas M. Johnson, Frederick J. Stephens, and Johnson Reference Books
Average review score:

The "Bible" for Third Reich Edged Blade collectors
This overview of Third Reich Edged Weapons is a must for all collectors whether you have 1 or 100 in your collection. A very good overview of the different variations of dress daggers with clear and representative pictures of each. Also has chapters on swords, dress-bayonets, engravings, etc. The book also has a number of chapters that should be read by all collectors. Especially the one on counterfeit daggers. It is the sort of book you as a collector just can't put down and as a reference book it is worth its weight in gold. It also has a very useful listing on RZM numbers. Good thing it is card-cover because I can see wearing this book out if it was paper-back. The book could possibly have had more color photographs, and a more updated overview on values.
